Slumped against a tree an injured knight felt his heart thumping in his chest, and no matter how he tried he just could not will his heart into a normal rhythm.
He was old, far older than he looked; a side effect of a lifetime of abusing restorative magics when simple bed rest would've done. Oh sure he had justified it to himself at the time.. everytime. He didn't have the time to allow his body to heal naturally: crime waited for no man's body.
And as he stared at the scroll clenched tightly in his fist he was doing the same again even as he remembered the priest's last words to him....
"Without ever letting your body recover in its own time naturally you have developed a toxic build up of positive energy within your body. Despite your appearance you are an old man, a very old man, and you have the heart of an old man. A heart that reacts violently to nearly a century of abuse from rejuvenative magics..."
Naturally the knight had protested vehemently that he would allow his body to heal naturally whenever he could but the news to come was worse yet..
"The human body can only take so much. I'm afraid you're well past that point, another healing spell could kill you. Even a simple potion is probably too much for your heart to take."
The knight knew, KNEW his heart couldn't take it; it felt fit to burst as it was. He also knew the dagger in his side wasn't a lethal wound.. yet as his assailant quickly shrank from view the knight pulled out a scroll and convinced himself he could will himself to survive, survive at least long enough to catch the Twilight Panther. With a quick prayer that his heart would hold out the knight began the quick chant of the healing mantra on the scroll shaking in his fists...
Everything went perfectly, he felting the familiar and comforting surge of healing warmth spread through his body bringing with it strength and vitality and as he hauled himself to his feet he cast his eyes towards Essenmoor's largest building, the hall of Justice in thanks for this borrowed time and then the knight's heart exploded and in the brief moment before he lost consciousness the knight also knew that this was indeed his very last moment.
