For the moment there are several types of Proficiency feat:
Basic Weapon Proficiency which represents the most basic and oldest forms of weapons, things that basically require no skill at all to operate reasonably effective.
Clubs, Daggers, Quaterstaves, Spears etc.
All True Spellcasters start with only Basic Weapon Proficiency
Generally characters with only basic weapon proficiency are not proficient with any armors or shields.
Basic Weapon Proficiency also grants the character a small amount of Prowess.
Simple Weapon Proficiency represent an advancement over the most basic tools, and tools modified into functional combat weapons, things anyone can get their hands on and learn reasonably quickly how to use to some degree of effectiveness.
Light Crossbows, Shortbows, Shortswords, darts, Lightmaces, light flails etc.
Those I've designated as 'Sorcerer Syndrome' a version of a true spellcaster that casts their spells naturally and usually has a greater skill pool\points and BAB start with Simple Weapon Proficiency(which includes basic weapons) aswell as 'Scoundrels'
Generally characters with simple weapon proficiency are only proficient in light armor and small shields.
Simple Weapon Proficiency also grants the character some bonus Prowess.
Martial Weapon Proficiency represents the tools of war, these are no longer simple farm tools picked up to defend yourself they have had years of evolution turning them into true deathbringing items. Generally too expensive for the average man to own they also usually require some serious training investment to use effectively.
Longswords, Bastard Swords, Heavy Crossows\Flails\Maces, Battleaxes, Longbows, Composite Shortbows, etc.
Martial or Warrior Classes are generally the only classes to know this automatically(including lesser proficiencies)
Generally characters with Martial weapon proficiency are also proficient with Heavy Armors and Large Shields. Though some characters are only proficient with Medium Armour and only fighters are automatically proficient with Tower Shields.
Martial Weapon Proficiency also grants the character bonus Prowess.
Exotic Weapon Proficiency represents rare or obscure weapons or generally hard and expensive to find, difficult to make and complicated to use.
Composite Longbows, Fullblades, etc.
Exotic Weapon Proficiency also grants the character a great deal of bonus Prowess.
Weapon Familiarity Represents a characters or races knowledge and\or expertise with more exotic weapons. It's used to give character's use of a weapon with the lesser proficiency(from exotic -> martial -> simple -> basic etc.)
Clerics and Favoured Souls also begin play having profeciency with their deities favoured weapon.
